The setting that makes every plan easy

Lake Tekapo is a highland lake and township at 710 m, surrounded by a vast basin of golden tussock grass, and it sits in the centre of the South Island in the Mackenzie Basin.8,9 The regional tourism body calls the lake turquoise and describes the village as conveniently halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown.10,11 For a traveler on a road trip, that position makes it a natural overnight stop.

The village is compact, so most things to do start within a short walk of the lakefront. The church stands on Pioneer Drive on the shore, the hot pools and the start of the Mount John track sit together at the Tekapo Springs complex, and the stargazing offices are in the village centre.12,13 You can leave the car parked for most of a day, which suits a slow trip.

The attraction that gives Tekapo its fame is the sky, and that comes at night. The rest of the day is open for the things below, and a good plan puts them in the light and keeps the evening free for a tour. This page walks through them in a rough order from easy to energetic.

Walks: from the lakefront stroll to the Richmond Trail

The Lake Tekapo Walkway takes 1 hour, is graded easy and mostly flat and allows dogs.1 It is the best first walk, because it gives you the lake, the shore and the open sky above the water without much effort, and nobody needs special shoes. Families, older travelers and anyone fresh off a long drive usually start here. The Cowans Hill Walkway takes 1 to 2 hours, mixes footpath, gravel 4WD track and forest, and does not allow dogs.15

For a longer outing, the Peninsula Walkway takes about 2.5 hours on undulating terrain near the lakeshore and on gravel road.17 The Mount John Summit Track is a moderate walk with a reasonably steep ascent in places, and the lakeshore version of the track takes 3 hours from the Tekapo Springs complex.18,13 Mountain bikes are not allowed on it.19

The long option is the Richmond Trail, which is 13 km and takes about 4 hours, but it is one-way, so you need a second vehicle or a pick-up.20 The chart on this page lines the walks up by time, which is the easiest way to decide. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and check the weather before a long walk, because the high country changes fast.

Mount John by car, with a glass cafe at the top

If walking does not appeal, drive up. The turnoff is 1 km south of the village on State Highway 8, and the road is open 9am to 4pm at $14 per vehicle.21,2,3 At the summit the Astro Cafe is fully enclosed in glass and serves from 9am to 2pm, with the final order at 1:30pm.22,14

The summit has 360-degree alpine views over the lake, and the observatory is the largest professional research observatory in the country.23,24 After a coffee, the Summit Circuit Track takes 30 to 45 minutes and loops the top.25 It is a good quiet hour in the middle of a day that has otherwise been busy, and the loop gives you the same views from several sides, so the lake looks different at each bend. Take a layer, because the top is more exposed than the village.

A separate page on this site covers the observatory in more detail. For planning purposes, treat Mount John as a morning or afternoon outing, because the cafe and the road both finish early. The night route up the hill is a tour with its own transport, and it is a separate booking.

Hot pools, passes and a warm end to the day

Tekapo's hot pools include 3 pools with stunning views, plus cooler pools with an aqua play area.6 The operator's pools are shaped like local lakes: Ohau at 36.5 °C, Pukaki at 37.5 °C and an adults-only Tekapo pool at 38.5 °C.28 Passes are all-day, multiple-entry passes valid at any time within daytime operating hours.7

A single-day, multiple-entry pass is listed from $24, rated 4.3 from 222 reviews, with children aged 2 and younger entering free, towel and swimsuit hire from $10 per item, and lockers from $5 per 3 hours. That price is for the pools only, and it does not include a tour.

Pools and stars can be combined. The 90-minute hot pools and stargazing listing is rated 4.3 from 66 reviews and starts from $111; if cloud limits the telescope viewing, an indoor virtual reality show takes its place, and if the sky gives less than 30 minutes at the telescopes a 25% partial refund applies. It is a good wet-weather plan with a warm payoff.

Lupins, seasons and what the weather does

Spring brings wild flowers that bloom throughout the region. The Lake Tekapo lupins are a popular subject for photographers, so ask locally which fields are in colour.29 No official body gives a fixed week for the peak, so look at recent local photographs before you plan a trip around them. Summer runs from November to February, which is the long-daylight season for walks.

Winter is a different place. From June to September, overnight temperatures drop below 0 °C, and snow settling on the ground is not uncommon, so warm clothes are a must.26,30 The average daily high in July is 7 °C and the low is -3.3 °C at the Tara Hills station, 73 km away.31 Winter days are shorter, and the nights are long and clear.

The season shapes the plan. In summer you can walk, swim and explore until late and fit a tour into the end of a very long day. In winter you can still walk, but you finish earlier, and the hot pools feel better than ever. Either way, pack layers, because a clear Tekapo evening is cold in any month.

Putting a day together

A balanced day starts with the lakefront walk, which takes 1 hour, and ends at the church while a volunteer guide may be on duty until 3pm.1,5 Lunch in the village leaves room for the hot pools or for Cowans Hill, which takes 1 to 2 hours.15 The evening then belongs to the sky.

If the weather is bad, swap the hill for the pools. The Indoor Dark Sky Cultural Astronomy Experience lasts 45 minutes, runs in all weather and is rated 4.6 from 50 reviews. It keeps a wet afternoon from being a wasted one, and it works as a warm-up for a clear-sky night later in the stay, since the names and the stories you hear indoors make the real sky easier to read.

And leave a spare evening for the main event. This site's tour lasts 75 minutes, takes up to 10 people to a private farm inside the dark sky reserve, and starts from $70. If the sky is clear on your first night, go that night, and use the rest of the stay for everything else on this page.
