Why the bed matters for a night under the stars

Lake Tekapo is a small place, with a population of about 500, so almost everything sits within a short walk or drive of everything else.4 That helps you on a stargazing trip: you finish a late tour, the air is freezing and you want a warm room, not a long drive. The right base turns the end of the night from a chore into a pleasure.

The choice splits in a few ways. You can stay in the village or further out, in a room or in a vehicle, in a place built around the view or one built around the price. The Mackenzie region's tourism site lists luxury lodges, glass-covered stargazing pods, rustic cabins, hotels, bed and breakfasts and farmstays among the places to stay.1

Because this page sits on a stargazing site, one test runs through all of it: how dark is the place, and how easy is it to reach your tour on foot or by a short ride. A hotel with a bright car park is a poorer fit than a plain cabin with curtains and a shielded porch light, however many stars the hotel has.

Hotels, suites and holiday homes

Tourism New Zealand picks out a few lakeside options. Grand Suites Tekapo offers 28 luxury self-contained suites overlooking Lake Tekapo.8 The same page lists Lakes Edge Holiday Park and Lodge, which offers camping, self-contained units, cabins and family holiday homes.9 These names are examples of the styles on offer and not a ranking.

Self-contained suites and holiday homes suit groups and families, because you have a kitchen, a living room and a door you can close behind a sleeping child. The Mackenzie accommodation directory lets you filter by pet friendly, child friendly and outdoor hot tub or bath, and by type, including apartment, holiday home, hotel, lodge, motel and studio.10

An outdoor hot tub or bath is an interesting filter for a stargazer, because it lets you do at home what a pool tour does on the night. A hot tub on a dark deck is a fine way to end a cold evening, as long as the deck lights are off. Ask the host before you book whether outdoor lights are shielded and switched off at night.

Dark windows and the lighting rules

The reserve's board says the Mackenzie District Council has strict lighting requirements in the District Plan, such as shielding all lights from above to direct light downwards, with regulations on duration, time and frequency.3 These rules are why the village can sit beside a world-class sky. They also shape what a host may do with a porch light or a floodlight.

The reserve runs a voluntary scheme for places to stay. Commercial businesses and private residences inside the reserve are invited to apply for Dark Sky Friendly certification.13 Its charter asks that exterior lights be off between 11pm and 5am, and ideally from 10pm to dawn.5 Premises with interior light spill are asked to use blinds or curtains to limit the effect outside.7

For you the practical effect is simple. Choose a room with real curtains, keep your own lights low, and do not switch on a bright torch on the doorstep when you come back from a tour. White light on the way in ruins the eyes of your neighbours who are still looking at the sky. A phone with the screen dimmed, or a red torch, does the job without spoiling anything.

Holiday parks, cabins and campervans

Lake Tekapo camping mostly means a holiday park. Lakes Edge Holiday Park offers unpowered and powered sites for tents, caravans and campervans, plus self-contained park motels, cabins, Kiwi baches and family holiday homes.2 Tourism New Zealand describes it as offering camping, self-contained units, cabins and family holiday homes by the lake.9 A park like this is the sensible way to sleep in a vehicle, since you have a marked pitch, toilets and a short walk to the village.

A cabin is the budget middle route. It gives you a bed and a roof at a lower price than a suite. The cold is the thing to plan for: the nights here run below freezing in winter, and Dark Sky Project warns that Tekapo can get very cold after dark even in summer.15

Whatever your base, check the local rules before you park a campervan anywhere other than a park. The council manages camping on its own land, and rules change, so confirm them with the Mackenzie District Council before you rely on any roadside spot. A holiday park removes that worry, and it removes the risk of a fine as well.

Walking to the tour, or being driven

Our own tour starts at the operator's office in Kiwi Treasure, which is the Lake Tekapo post office, and a 5-minute transfer takes the group to the farm site. That makes any base in the village a short stroll from the start. The listing is wheelchair accessible, and the guides speak English and Japanese.

Other tours start elsewhere. The town tour meets at the operator's town office on Simpson Lane, about a 20-minute walk from the centre, and the stargazing site is a 4-minute drive from the village; a transfer can be added for 20 dollars a person. Dark Sky Project's guests check in at its base at 1 Motuariki Lane, and a bus runs 15 minutes up to the summit, or a 5-minute drive to the crater.16,12,11

Tekapo Springs provides a free shuttle, subject to availability, to and from Tekapo Village centre and local hotels, which helps if you plan to join its pool evening from a base further out.14 The hot pool tour checks in at Tekapo Springs Reception, 300 Lakeside Drive, 15 minutes before the start.17 Ask your host which tour starts closest to your door.

Putting the stay and the sky together

Book the room first and the tour second, then pick a tour with a cancellation rule you can live with. Our listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before and lets you reserve now and pay later. That gives you room to move the night if the forecast turns, without losing a room or a fare.

If you have two nights, give one to a farm telescope tour and keep the other free. A free evening is also a chance to stargaze for nothing: Mackenzie tourism suggests bringing blankets, folding chairs and a thermos and finding a good spot on the canal roads, where the stars reflect in the water.18 Take the red torch with you.

For one night only, favor a base in the village. You will walk to the start, you will finish late and you will not have to drive. The getting-there page on this site covers the road side, and the best-time page tells you which months bring the longest nights and the deepest cold. Pack for the cold in every case.
